On Friday the 22nd of July Access Sport partnered with Creation Trust and Burgess Sports to host a community day at Burgess Park, Southwark. The event aimed to inform the community about all of the great activities available for young people in their local community over the summer. The event boasted a true community feel, with families coming together enjoying an abundance of sporting activities, arts and crafts, and of course the delicious pizza…

On arrival at Burgess Park the children were registered and given a membership card, whilst parents were provided with information about the activities that were being held throughout the day.

There certainly was something on offer for everyone with activities ranging from colouring competitions to making masks, swing ball, table tennis and tug of war, to name a few!

One of the liveliest of activities was the BMX. The impress track in Burgess Park was put to great use with an estimated 40 - 60 youngsters having a go throughout the day! The BMX was such a huge success and so much fun that many of the children have since returned for more by attending the regular sessions run at the track throughout the week.

One of the most enthusiastic and inspiring participants was 20 year old Adisa. Due to previous illness Adisa has been unable to be as physically active as she has wanted during her teenage years, but on Friday her mother told her to go down to Burgess Park together with her brother. Despite some hesitation at first, Adisa decided to give it a go and had a really fantastic time, particularly enjoying the BMX! This introduction to the thrilling sport of BMX has led Adisa to attend the BMXercise sessions regularly which she really enjoys! BMXercise are BMX sessions provided by Access Sport for women and girls only as a fun variation of keeping fit and enjoying being on the bikes together with likeminded people. For more information about the BMXercise sessions taking place across London, get in touch with our BMXercise team.

In total, over 200 children and parents took part in the community day, and this resulted in 60 children signing up for the various summer programmes. Access Sport would like to thank Burgess Park and Creation Trust for arranging the fantastic day, and corporate partner Colombia Threadneedle for providing two volunteers to help out.

The day had a very relaxed and inviting feeling to it with parents and children spending quality time together and enjoying the wide range of free activities. Access Sport can proudly say that we helped unlock the power of community sport that day!
